Fatty Tumors

Fatty tumors, or lipomas, are growths that are composed of fat deposits just below the skin. They are non-cancerous and are common in dogs, but rare in cats (though we did have one cat with a fatty tumor, which we were able to treat). It is not typically necessary to treat a fatty tumor for health reasons, so surgery is not needed. There are herbal options available that we have successfully used to shrink fatty tumors.

Pau D'arco - inner bark. Applied to the skin, it can work to break apart a fatty tumor. It can be purchased as a liquid extract or in powder form. The liquid extract or powder mixed in water or olive oil can be applied directly to the skin over the fatty tumor. We have also given it as a supplement in food to decrease the size of the tumor. We use a dosage of 500mg per 20lbs of body weight per day, mixed into food.

Turmeric - a great anti-inflammatory. Mix the powder in with food at 1/4 teaspoon per pound of body weight.
