Arthritis

Arthritis in cats and dogs can cause stiffness and pain in the legs. We have avoided prescription medications, which can be harsh on the kidneys and liver, causing even more problems. These are remedies we have used successfully.

Turmeric - a great anti-inflammatory. We used this on a dog who had problems after a surgery to fix her back knee, which she tore while running. She could not put her leg down, as it was just too stiff and she yelped in pain if you tried to move it. The pain medication given by our vet at the time did nothing to help her. I added turmeric to her food. Within a couple of days, she was walking normally. Use up to 1/4 teaspoon per 10 pounds of your pet's weight.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin - Glucosamine helps to regenerate damaged cartilage in the join, while chondroitin blocks the enzymes that break down cartilage. The combination can be found in tablets, capsules or treats. The typical strength is 500mg glucosamine hydrochloride & 400mg chondroitin sulfate. Using the glucosamine to figure out the dose, we use 20mg glucosamine per pound of body weight. Pet Naturals of Vermont has a variety of treats for cats and dogs that use glucosamine and Chondroitin.

Acupuncture - has worked very well to reduce stiffness and relax our pets.

Cold Laser Therapy - we have had this done by a veterinarian, in conjunction with acupuncture treatments. We also do treatments ourselves using a VetroLaser. The laser works to reduce inflammation and regenerate tissue.
